Toile Origins Toile, the beautiful fabric that has been loved
by people for centuries, has very interesting origins, and there are many
different contradictions concerning its beginnings. However, most agree
that it started in Jouy-en-Josas, France. In the year 1760, the first
manufacturing plant was started in order to mass produce this lovely fabric. Regardless of toile's lovely and unblemished appearance,
its origins are distinctly shady. Christopher-Phillippe Oberkampf was
very involved in producing the fabric. At that point in time, it was a
very involved process, and was very expensive and costly. It was reserved
for only the very wealthy. However, Christopher-Phillipe developed several secret methods to make the creation of this material significantly less labor-intensive, and much less costly. He invented a genius technique that used copper rollers and engraved patterns. Due to the discrepancy between the actual cost to produce the lovely material, and the cost that was charged customers, he made a fortune.
