Modern Toile If you like the look of toile, but French pastoral scenes are not your style, there are many new trends evolving in toile. From a distance, many still have the calm, peaceful feel and crisp lines of traditional toile, but the scenes are anything but country. Many of the bigger world cities, as well as popular tourist destinations, like Disneyland, are now having toile patterns modeled and named after them. Hong Kong created by French fabric company, Pierre Frey, has created a cityscape of Hong Kong with landmarks and even traffic jams. Glasgow, Scotland has its own signature toile as well. Timorous Beasties, a Glasgow-based design firm, has paid homage to its hometown with a toile that features local hot spots and scenes from daily life. From afar it may look like your typical idyllic toile scene, but that is far from the case. It showcases modern urban life, complete with scenes like a junkie shooting up. Far less cutting edge is a trend towards more kid-friendly toile. Many toile patterns now consist of scenes from childrens books. One popular toile pattern is Classic Winnie the Pooh. Pooh and his friends adventures are beautifully chronicled throughout the patterns. The possibility in this field is as endless as childrens stories themselves. There are also some trends sticking with traditional patterns, but shying away from the traditional colors of toile. Designers are straying from the white and cream backgrounds and favoring bolder colors. One such designer, Manuel Canovas, has released a toile wallpaper with a magenta background with lime green outlines. With the resurgence of toile, it is exciting to see that there is truly a toile for everyone.
