Collecting Toile

Whenever you buy a new product, it is important to buy from someone that you know is a dependable source. Sometimes this comes in the form of a brand name, sometimes in the form of a recommendation from a friend. Toile bedding is no exception. Whether it is an idea for a design, or a recommended store, manufacturer, or sale, others influence our choices when buying things, including toile.

Most people purchase toile from a store they are familiar with, such as department stores, fabric stores, or home décor stores. However, it may surprise many that some people actually collect different types of toile. What makes it so special? Well, many different facts contribute to determining how rare a piece of toile really is. Two of the main factors are the scene that is depicted, and the age of the fabric.

Obviously, just like with pictures, the less common a scene is, the rarer and more desirable it is considered. Most of these depict scenes from a French countryside, such as a farm, well, or children. While all toile designs are intricate, some are more detailed than others. Fabrics with historical events depicted are also considered rare.

Toile has been around for more than two hundred and fifty years. As such, there are many variations. The general rule of thumb is that the older a piece of fabric is, the more unique it is likely to be. However, quality is also important to take into consideration.
